Construction
Construction - Long Span Commercial Construction
I decided on the recently renovated Spencer Street Station commonly known as Southern Cross Station mainly because its easily accessible and one of the most well known long span commercial constructions. The central features of the design include a wave-shaped roof, a new entrance and concourse on Collins Street.
The architect responsible for the design is Grimshaw Architects. The structural engineering design was performed by a consulting structural engineering design firm Winward Structures.
1Construction began in October 2002 and was completed in late 2006, with the majority of the transport facilities having been finished in time for the 2006 Commonwealth Games
I took a range of different photos during the day and late at night also during peak hour and off peak periods of the day, to show the different light and shadows cast through Southern Cross Station.
The design of the unique and innovative construction consists of steel and glass domed tubular roof structure, comprised of spine trusses along the platforms and long span arches across multiple railway lines.
2Two hundred tonnes of steel counterweight are secured before the 90-metre crane arm, dangling its precious cargo, swings slowly across the city backdrop. A total of 54 trusses will support the wavy roof of the $700 million station.
